Exclusive: Liverpool returns to deal for £44 million Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes

Nunes just joined Wolves last summer, but if Liverpool follows through on their promise to make an offer for him, he may leave at the end of the season.

Matheus Nunes, a midfielder for Wolverhampton Wanderers, is being looked at by Liverpool as part of a contract that was made last summer when the Portugal international was on the verge of joining the Anfield club but the trade fell through.

The Brazilian-born Nunes was purchased by Wolves for almost £38 million last summer after being linked to Liverpool for months. According to what is known, Liverpool promised to make a future bid for him, and the transaction is still very much in play this month. If it is approved, Nunes will probably transfer to Liverpool at the end of the current campaign. Despite his sluggish start in English football, the move will probably cost approximately €50 million (£44 million).

Attacking midfielder Nunes, 24, has become a key member of Sporting Lisbon over the past two years. Last season, a number of major European teams, notably Manchester City, kept tabs on him. In the end, he signed a record contract with Wolves with the intention of leaving once he had gotten used to the Premier League. He has not quite met Wolves' expectations for success.

Both the interim coach Steve Davis and the immediately preceding manager Bruno Lage were responsible for Nunes' injury. He last played a full 90 minutes for Wolves in a 3-0 home loss to Manchester City on September 17, prior to the setback at Manchester United on Saturday. He has displayed glimpses of the play that made him so in demand as a player last summer. He played twice for Portugal during the World Cup, starting the team's last group game loss to South Korea.

In the January transfer window, Liverpool has already leaped ahead of Manchester United to make the World Cup standout and Dutch international Cody Gakpo a huge £37 million purchase from PSV Eindhoven. Although Nunes is more of a long-term project, the club continues to see him as a player with a bright future at Anfield.

Diogo Jota's move to Anfield in September 2020 was reached after amicable negotiations between Liverpool and Wolves. Darwin Nunez, a striker from Uruguay, joined Benfica last summer in a transaction that set a club record and cost almost £85 million. The Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes was engaged in that trade, and if the Nunes deal to Anfield goes through, he will also be involved in that transaction.

The Wolves' owners, Fosun, have a business strategy that involves purchasing exceptional talent and then selling it for a significant profit. Julen Lopetegui is still leading the club's fight against relegation. On Saturday, the third round of the FA Cup pits the two clubs against one another.
